  Don't buy a LitterMaid!!

  ok, this is kind of lame, but if i keep one person from wasting their money.... those of you who don't know about this, there is such a thing as a 'electric cat box' that scoops itself.

  it's not that i'm lazy, but i have 3 cats, and i take pride in keeping cat smell down to zero or close to it.

  most people actually comment when they come into my house, that they are amazed they can't smell a cat box.

  We bought one of these when I was pregnant with my youngest thinking it would be a good way to solve the problem of me not being able to scoop the box (which I do several times a day because I HATE smelling eau de catbox in anyone's house, especially my own) and my husband would only have to empty it daily.

  It worked like a dream--2 cats, no sticking, no stinky odor, great product for us.

  The problem? One of my cats was so afraid of it that she refused to use it. REFUSED. She registered this refusal one day by peeing on my brand new sofa. The next day she exhibited her disapproval for the new gadget by pooping in my husband's open briefcase.

  Needless to say, we no longer use this item. The most surprising part of the story? The store took it back simply emptied out and repacked into it's original box. I used the credit to my Visa towards a really nice carpet/upholstry shampooer.

  Do you think people take the bible too seriously?

  i know the bible has a lot of important lessons in it, but such a controversial book that is likely changed and such is quite a bit to live your life by.

  i mean, how do you know that daniel wasn't a constant opium user?

  or how do you know that the bible is complete?

  Yes, I do think people take the Bible too seriously. (And the Koran, and the Torah, and any other 'holy' book for that matter) The Canons have gone through countless minor--and major--changes throughout the century, and even if an 'original' text was authenticated it would likely be no more infallible than the current versions.

  The bible is a book about faith. It is not a book about law, or history, or prophetic certainties. There are some really good, useful principles in the Bible. There are also some really useful principles in "The Cat in the Hat". Does that then mean that I should compile the complete works of Dr. Seuss and declare them sacred? ("Thou Shalt not eat in a boat, thou shalt not eat with a goat--thus sayeth the Lord")

  We would do well to remember the old adage "Beware of the man who has read only one book".

  JW friend is now JW bf, help.

  i have a friend whos a jw and last october we started to hang out together (just us two).

  everything was fine, we'd talk, watch movies etc.

  then i started to feel different towards him, i started to like him.

  I hate to be the one to give you this news, but you are suffering from a severe case of being 19 and infatuated. There is one known cure: Time.

  Nothing you've written about is tied to a deep abiding love or respect for this boy you like. When people act irrationally (like you stated that you have several times in only two days recounting of this relationship) they are often motivated not by love, but by a very intense infatuation with the idea of who this boy is and could be in your life. You leave to go home, then 'end up' at his door. You make up excuses to see him when you know it's futile. You call him giddy with infatuation the day after you vow not to pursue a relationship with him. It's time to step back, dig deep and find the self respect you're repressing, dust it off and put it back on. Will you miss him? Sure. Will it feel like your heart is breaking? Probably. Will you get over it and be better for having done so? YES.

  This boy is not your destiny, he is not your savior. He is a guy you might have had some sort of normal relationship with had there not been several strikes against you from the get go. Gather up your dignity and remind yourself that before this boy you now want to 'help' came into your life, you weren't falling apart at the seams. You won't fall apart when you let this fantasy go, either. You'll be fine--be gentle with yourself during the process and you will be just fine.

  The other spin is if this woman is mentally ill, give her a break....

  I suppose that all depends on what "give her a break" means. If you mean she shouldn't be incarcerated in a standard prison, I'm with you. If you feel we should pat her on the head, tell her it isn't her fault and encourage her to seek help, I disagree.

  If she is mentally ill enough to make such a decision she needs immediate, involuntary treatment--and that means that she will likely need to be incarcerated in some capacity.

  Let's say for a moment she had been a beauty queen. Would her actions then be excusable? Absolutely not. She chose, with foreknowledge of the probable result, to let her child die rather than have a scar on her abdomen. Lock her up.

  As for prosecuting women for the choices they knowingly make during pregnancy that cause harm to their unborn children when they are choosing to carry them to full term--lock them up too. If they are voluntarily continuing a pregnancy while engaging in activities where the risks to the baby are known to them, they are culpable. There was a Law & Order the other night on this subject concerning a mother who repeatedly consumed alcohol during her pregnancy. She had previously had a child with fetal alcohol syndrome and continued to drink during a current pregnancy she fully intended to carry to term. She is not trustworthy to make decisions for the child she has decided to carry to term.

  I am SO in love...!

  ..... with my 7-year-old son!

  last night, while i was still brushing my teeth, he crawled into my bed and laid his head on my pillow.

  i jokingly told him that he wasn't supposed to be on my side of the bed and that he had to move.

  It truly is possible to fall in love with your children all over again every day...

  One february, when my son was about four we were walking through the grocery store and, noticing all the red hearts and pink streamers he asked me "Mom, what is Valentine's day?" I told him that it was a special day set aside to spend with someone you love very much. He thought about it for a moment and then said, in the sweetest little voice, "Mommy, can I spend Valentine's day with you?" It was such a sweet moment, and one I'll never forget.

  An aisle over, a woman stopped us and said that she hadn't meant to eavesdrop but she had heard what he said and thought it was so sweet it made her weepy. Me too.

  One more that I remembered: When I was a little girl and took a sack lunch to school, my parents would always include a little note with a simple message like "I love you" or "Have a good day" or "I'm proud of you" and it always meant the world to me. I continue this tradition with my children. When my son was in kindergarten, I opened my thermal lunch bag one day at work to find a piece of notebook paper covered with stars and happy faces in blue highlighter that said "I love you, From (his first and last name)". I still have it hanging on my office door.

  Whats the most unhealthiest place you've ever ate at?

  there's this place here in town called "babe's".

  its soooooooooooooooo good, but the only drawback is that the hamburger is more grease and fat than it is meat.

  they'll actually take the dripping fat with the spatula and throw it back in the burger and start smashing it in.

  That depends on the definition of 'unhealthiest'.

  Scariest: A chinese restaurant near my office served me an order of mongolian beef that, half way through eating, I found the mashed carapice of a beetle like insect in. In addition to throwing up from sheer disgust, I didn't eat a bite of food for nearly 4 days afterwards--I still have food related issues stemming from that experience.

  Non-'healthy: My Grandmother's house. I don't think she ever baked anything unless it included butter, cream, or copious amounts of oil or sugar. Not that I ever turned down a meal Granny made--they were always delicious--no where else on earth could you eat your cereal with half and half, have the very best scrambled eggs in the world (corn oil AND butter in liberal amounts was the secret) and have toasted pound cake slices slathered in butter for breakfast. Granny lived to be 97, so it didn't seem to hurt her much. I always came home a pound or two heavier after extended visits.

  Obviously not JW related, but it sprang to mind immediately reading the topic. One of our IT programmers wrote a complicated internal office program. In the hallway one day, I stopped him and asked how I could alter one of the features that had worked fine initially, but was suddenly malfunctioning during printing. He told me he couldn't fix it--I responded by saying that it was working fine a week ago, and he threw his hands up and said:

  "Hey, I can't control how the program reacts."

  What the hell do you mean you can't control how the program reacts, jackball? You are the programmer! Isn't your entire job to control how the program reacts?

  He is now so afraid of me he won't come to my office alone. Normally, that would bother me. With him, I kinda like it.

  A sexual assault survivor once said something that resonated very deeply with me--

  She said that while she was beginning her process of recovery, she suddenly found herself in a group she never wanted to be part of, but now that she was a member it was nice to know she wasn't alone. When she spoke to another survivor, she asked "Do you still think about it every day?" When they said "No, not anymore" she knew, for the first time, that someday she would get there too.

  I remember hearing that at just the right moment in my life. Lady Lee, you're so right--silence is the enemy.
